Sometimes a pompom is all you need

Do you think your toque is missing that little something? Whether you knit your own toque or buy one, sometimes a pompom is all you need to finish the look.

It’s easier to make than you may think.

What you’ll need.

  • 2 pieces of cardboard – a cereal box will do
  • Scissors
  • Yarn

To start!

Take your 2 pieces of card board and trace a small to medium size bowl. Trace a smaller circle in the middle.

Step 2:

Cut. You should have two circles that look something like this.

Next.

Place the two circles on top of each other and begin to wrap the yarn. Once you have finished wrapping, cut the yarn sitting between the two circles. Then slightly pull the circles apart from each other. Take a longer piece of yarn and tie a knot between the two circles. Make sure its tight. I usually make 2-3 knots just to be safe. Pull away the two circles and voila!

You have a pompom that you can attach to your hat as you like.

Honest question: in your opinion is it socially acceptable for a guy to have a pom pom on his hat (NFL football players notwithstanding)?

      Hi Matthew,

I for one think its perfectly fine for a guy to have a pom pom on his hat. Heck, who cares what other people think. If you want a pom pom wear a pom pom!

What I think it really comes down to is your confidence when you wear the hat. If you aren’t coming across comfortable and confident wearing it, it’ll show.

I say, if you want to wear it, rock it.

I agree, and I proudly sport mine whenever it gets cold enough to justify it. 🙂 But the other night my hat and I randomly became a subject of some intense debate at a local bar where I live (in DC). Ironically, most guys were ok on the subject of it; I’d say the girls were split 50/50 – which was part of the reason I sought out your opinion in the first place.

Oh I like the context! Well, I hope that the debate hasn’t made you question wearing one!

If that’s excessive then what’s just right? (I’m going to keep going until this threat hits 10 comments.) 😛
