Playback: May ’14

How has another month passed by so quickly? Well, maybe it’s because I got up to a lot. May marked my 2nd month living in the city and boy did a lot happen.

Linda and Nancy at CKCO
Linda and Nancy at CKCO

When it came to work I hit the road by myself for some media touring. Our client Alberta Barley was in town for a book launch event and some media interviews. It was my first oppotunity to take the reigns and be the point person in station, on the road. I took Linda and Pat out to their interviews in Toronto at Proud FM, Kitchener at CTV and Burlington for CHCH Morning Live. It was a tiring couple of days but I loved it! Hope to do more, more often!

Also, Barley is amazing! You really should check out their recipes!

grandparents
Grandpa, me, Anders and Grandma

My grandparents decided to make a quick weekend visit from Calgary. They stopped by to check out my apartment before we made our way to my parents place. One of the highlights of the visit was making borscht with my grandma! So tasty, easy and something I remember her making all the time when I was younger because my Dad always asked for it.

I took a trip out to Winnipeg! I’ve always wanted to visit Winnipeg and I finally had a reason. Winnipeg was hosting the Icelandic National League of North America‘s annual convention, and because I’m part of the Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto I was able to go. So, I jumped on a flight and made my way to Winnipeg!

I’m planning on writing more about my trip later, but I sure did get a chance to see a lot. All over Winnipeg, North, South, East and West, downtown and suburbs. I was also able to take a trip up to Winnipeg Beach and Gimli.

Best of all I was able to see some of my favourite people – Marisa, Sacha and Christin.

In May I started my metal and glass workshop! Yay! There was a moment that I didn’t think the program would be happening but it is and I’m loving it! So far I’ve made this silver ring and copper origami elephant pendent. I don’t exactly what I’ll do with the elephant, still deciding what it will be! Necklace? Hair-clip? Pin? Options!

With our *almost* finished projects!
With our *almost* finished projects!

In April my very good friend Lara put out a call for anyone wanting to take a weaving course with her in Kingston. Truth be told, I had never entertained the thought of weaving, but when I saw her post I thought, yes, yes I should do this. I made my way Kingston for a 3 day course with the Kingston Handloom, Weavers and Spinners Guild. I have so much more respect for fabric now!  It’s a fascinating skill to develop and I’m interested in finding somewhere in Toronto to continue learning.

I haven’t finished up my project yet, still need to finish off the ends and attach it to a dowel and hang it on my wall. I’ll have to do it soon!

Sacha storytelling with Serentypical Home
Storytelling with Serentypical Home

My friend Asad, hosted a storytelling and open-mic night called Serentypical Home at the Dupont. The evening was themed around the concept of travel – whatever that means to you. It was a pretty rad night with about 30 people sharing food and stories in a living room. Gotta say, it was a pretty inspiring night.

Asad had written the group saying that someone would be speaking about Iceland, and I thought to myself “Oh Cool! Someone is going to talk about Iceland! I can’t wait to meet this person!” Of course, it turned out that person was me. I told a story from my first trip to Iceland which you can read about here.

I don’t know when the next event will be, but I’m looking forward to it, whenever it is!

Hayley Wickenheiser sharing the journey to gold
Hayley Wickenheiser sharing the journey to gold

I was able to attend The Art of Leadership in Women Conference at the end of the month and I’m still processing what I learnt! The speakers included Erica Ariel Fox, Katty Kay, Martha Stewart, Liane Davey and Hayley Wickenheiser. There was also an executive panel and the event was hosted by Wendy Mesley. I’ve got to say, Wendy Mesley is fantastic. I love her reporting and anchoring style, but man, her humour! So great! I also really loved hearing from Katty Kay. Very strong story teller. I’m planning on picking up a copy of her The Confidence Code soon!

I left the day feeling inspired. I know that I can have it all, I just have to determine what my “all” is.

3 musketeers
3 musketeers

To cap off the month I had some pretty great guests. My university roommate Ali, and pseudo roommate Victoria made their way down for a weekend in the city. We made the most of it. Friday night we grabbed dinner and drinks avec my dude and then made our way to a midnight live screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show! Um. Yes. So glad we did that! The last time I saw the movie was with Ali in university and we said we should try and see a live show! Gosh, I loved it!

We spent the rest of the weekend wandering around the city. We walked down to the Distillery, bused out to the beaches, shopped, explored the aquarium, shopped some more and ate yummy foods. Crepes, Japanese food, the best pizza I’ve had to date. Yummers!

So glad I got a weekend with the girlfriends!
