Playback: September ’14

Well, well, well! I have to be more on top of these playbacks! October is so close to being over, but better late than never right? I got hit by the fall bug pretty hard right off the top of September which lasted almost all month. It wasn’t strep this time, but I only found that out after taking all my antibiotics and a second trip to the docs. Oh colds, they are pretty vicious. I tried my hardest to stay healthy and pulled it together for a pretty fun month with friends if I do say so myself.

I had to be in Burlington for an early morning TV shoot, which meant I got to visit my family the night before. It also happened to be the night before my brother’s birthday. Yumm! Birthday cake!

I made my way to Ottawa for a weekend with the group in celebration of Ali’s birthday. It was a beautiful, summery weekend. We drove over to Quebec for a bit of a “hike” at Gatineau Park. In true Sacha fashion, I was hit by a burst of energy and decided to start running (that happened both days actually). We found a waterfall and I couldn’t just observe it, I had to try and climb it. For Ali’s birthday we trekked out to Hooley’s. I had been hearing about this magical place for so long, it was time I saw it in action. So nice to be with these people on their turf.

With election season looming, I thought it would be a great idea to head out to a debate. My interest in attending was increased by the fact that my friend Elamin was the moderator. Both Olivia Chow and John Tory were there with Ari Goldkind taking the third leader’s spot. The debate also highlighted three young candidates and their plans for Toronto. The debate was held at the beautiful Evergreen Brick Works.

TIFF seemed to come and go this year without even the slightest spark of interest on my end. The night before the last day, Robin sent me a text asking if I wanted to see something. Yes, sure, why not? We went to see What We Do in the Shawdows and it was such a great choice! Jermaine Clement from Flight of the Concords directed, wrote and starred in the film and stopped by afterwards to speak with the crowd about this documentary. The film won the Grolsch People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award and after watching it I sure would have voted for it too. Check out the trailer!

Kevin was in town for a rotation so the Ottawa gang drove down for another mini reunion! Let’s be serious here, these are some pretty freaking fantastic people to be friends with.

I attended an event put on by Pilot PMR with some colleagues and  Jenna. Pilot PMR has been hosting panel discussions around the theme “XXX is my Co Pilot”. The one that we attended was around the Ford brothers and their treatment of  crisis communications. Certainly anyone who’s been following the Fords over the past couple years knows that they do not handle crisis communications by the book. It was an interesting panel discussion. Robyn Doolittle was there and I told her I loved her. Well… not really. I told her that I was really happy for all her success and we chatted for a moment.

I’ve been in a bit of a country folk mood lately so I picked up tickets to see Shovels and Rope at the Phoenix. Oh man. They make some lovely music! I wish it wasn’t a Tuesday night though!
